âItâs part of a psalm,â I murmured, bitterly. ââIn pursuit of good purpose, blood may be spilledâ. Someone go up before me, so I can lift them up to you.â
âIâll go ahead and get the horses,â Ravus said, swiftly climbing the ladder and dashing off out of sight.
Sig followed behind him, saying as he passed me, âOur purse has a safehouse ready for us with a Physician waiting. He said theyâd need tending to after he saw them at the hearing the other day. Try to stay focused. We are not out of the woods, yet.â
I nodded, and coughed into my elbow, hitching Darcy up against my chest and readying to lift them up the ladder above me to the waiting wolf.
We rode for hours, taking a circuitous path through the city through side streets and alleys, even a few yards we were able to cut through on horseback. The mercenaries had planned a route, but I ended up guiding us through most of it, using a city map Iâd taken from the Archives before weâd left. We avoided every major road, carriage post, guard house and anywhere there might be suspicious eyes on us.
And of course, we avoided the Church, the Ministry, and anywhere near the courthouse Dolus was apparently at tonight.
After that, we rode through dark forests and countryside, across fields and farmland, taking deer trails and wagon roads alike, putting as much distance between ourselves and the city as possible.
I kept Darcy close to my chest, trying to warm them as well as I was able. My breathing did not get better once we were galloping through the night air, but the attack began to lessen once we were outside the city walls. What remained in the wake of it was a hollow exhaustion I could not allow myself to fully feel⦠not until we were somewhere safe. I tried to be mindful of my condition, lest I grow so weak I might endanger the two of us on horseback, but my body did not fail me in the end.
We made it to the safehouse, a cabin tucked away near a dilapidated mill, deep into the night. The place was lit by dim lantern light, and a small trail of smoke curled out from the chimney. A horse was tied in the stables, but I did not take the time to tie my own up. I left Blackbow to the mercenaries and swiftly carried Darcy inside.
The door opened before Iâd even lifted a fist to knock, and the fellow who greeted me was a sharply-dressed black and silver fox of mature age, based on the additional silvering along his thin muzzle. He didnât bother asking me who I was, only gestured for us to come inside with a flick of his orange-gold eyes and made way for me to carry the feline in.
âSet them down in the bedroom,â he said, pointing towards the doorway to the only other room in this small place. âIâve my things in there.
